NYS BOCES School Library Systems
Many New York State Bureau of Cooperative Educational Services School Library Systems use OPALS to access and share instructional resources within their regions. Their union catalogs collectively serve more than 2500 school libraries, house millions of resources, and use an integrated, interlibrary loan module designed by regional directors, to share them.
OPALS interlibrary loan management features enable students and librarians to make and manage almost paperless requests. The ILL utility facilitates single requests, requests for multiple titles to various libraries and simultaneous multiple title and copy requests to multiple locations.
OPALS union catalogs are z39.50 client and server protocol compliant making them an excellent source of MARC bibliographic records. Union catalogs are also an excellent reference for collection development. In 2019, several BOCES School Library Systems will inaugurate regional eBook union catalogs for resources cataloged and where access rights have been acquired for school library use in their respective regions.
